The first part of the workshop will be an introduction to the problem based on Joanna's experience and art. The leading topic of the introduction is poverty, social exclusion, reproduction of poverty.
Please bring with you regular art tools and supplies such as crayons, pencils, colour paints and brushes etc.

The Commons

There is a crisis when dealing with the commons (the public goods) and more accurately when taking care of them. In this crisis we struggle to see them a part of our own environment and we do not consider ourselves responsible for them. To take care of the commons means to treat them in an intimate way. Public good is a non-capitalistic form of wealth (as Hardt and Negri wrote....describe).
In this workshop we will attempt to create a definition of the commons, having at disposal only things we have brought with us. We will try to figure out where these goods come from and how to take care of them (individually and/or together). We will only use our belongings that we are willing to get rid of to build one new thing together. Finally, we will decide what to do with this new object.

Starting from 1999 Joanna Wowrzeczka has been actively participating in the art world. Until 2009 she exhibited her works mainly in the galleries and later she started to deal with public and social spaces. Today, consciously she resigns from the exclusive art world.
In 1998/99 with her colleague she established and run the POFA - a library at the Institute of Art with the collection of publications on contemporary art and a site for workshops.
In 2002 with two other artists she founded Galerie Szara in Cieszyn - an important place on the art map.
In 2009 with three friends of her, she opened the Political Critique in Cieszyn and one of its main premises is to break the artificial limits between politics and art by mixing up the fields of sociology, philosophy, art and culture theory that always tries to combine and confront different perspectives.
