With Halloween approaching, I only thought it was appropriate to share a Halloween themed nebula! This is the Witch Head Nebula. The very bright star is Rigel, the right foot of Orion. The brightness and closeness of this star makes this a particularly hard object to capture since it is easy to get it washed out by the brightness of Rigel. All of the red in the background is actually hydrogen alpha gas, and it's generally not visible in images of the Witch Head because it's even fainter than the nebula, took many hours of careful work to preserve it and really make it pop.

The Eastern Veil nebula in narrowband. Most people present this nebula as a blue and red, either due to shooting in natural color, or with only hydrogen alpha and oxygen-iii. However, with the addition of and Sii data, I opted for closer to the Hubble SHO palette. This filament like structure is actually remnants from a star that exploded, and the image is a smaller part of the total structure.

Here's to my yearly image of the Heart Nebula to celebrate Valentine's Day. Hey @annacarrick ? Normally I'd try not to take a picture of the same thing more than once, but this is one of my favorite objects in the sky so I'll make an exception. Notice anything missing in the image though? I removed the stars! Thought it really helped bring out the structure of the nebula when they were gone. In hindsight I probably should have made it more red for the occasion, but these colors I thought just looked too nice to pass up.

A mysterious, squid-like apparition, this nebula is very faint, but also very large in planet Earth's sky. It spans some 2.5 full moons toward the constellation Cepheus. Recently discovered by French astro-imager Nicolas Outters, the remarkable nebula's bipolar shape and emission are consistent with it being a planetary nebula, the gaseous shroud of a dying sun-like star, but its actual distance and origin are unknown. A new investigation suggests Ou4 really lies within the emission region SH2-129 some 2,300 light-years away. Consistent with that scenario, the cosmic squid would represent a spectacular outflow of material driven by a triple system of hot, massive stars, cataloged as HR8119, seen near the center of the nebula. If so, this truly giant squid nebula would physically be nearly 50 light-years across. This is a some data from last year but I never got it quite right in terms of the edit. I finally worked it again though and I am much more happy with it and was actually awarded Image of the Day for it. I took a lot of advice from Nico Carver and Nicolas Kizilian (thank you both very much!) on my last edit of it that was never posted and what I could do to improve. They both suggested that the Squid could use so more contrast and that it was all just a solid blue color, no really transparency to it. So I did my best to fix that in this new edit. I am still not entirely pleased with it, but it has come a really long way compared to just editing it like I would a normal image. Regardless, this was definitely one of the most difficult data sets I have had to work with yet, the thing is just so damn dim you can’t see it at all in a single frame. Just a blast though to see it complete and I couldn’t be happier.

The Great Nebula in Orion, also known as M42, entirely in the visible spectrum using over 13 hours of exposure. The Orion Nebula is one of the most famous nebulae in the sky. The star forming region's glowing gas clouds and hot young stars are on the right in this image. Located at the edge of an otherwise invisible giant molecular cloud complex, these eye-catching nebulas represent only a small fraction of this galactic neighborhood's wealth of interstellar material. Within the well-studied stellar nursery, astronomers have also identified what appear to be numerous infant planetary systems.
